New technology heralds new era for transport and logistics communications

Telstra's PTT Network

Narrow band radio has been the traditional mode of communication for transport and logistics operators for many years but new technology is beginning to transform the way the industry communicates.

One of Australia’s largest and most modern bus fleets has recently made the shift to modern cellular-based devices supplied by Logic Wireless and using Telstra’s Push to Talk (PTT) network. Push To Talk allows a large number of users to communicate instantly as a group using the extensive coverage of the Telstra cellular network.

“Our client was looking for a solution that included modern functionality, enhanced the driver’s environment and was, most importantly, easy to use,” Neil Johnson, Sales Manager at Logic Wireless says.

Siyata UV350 the perfect fit

“We suggested installing Siyata UV350 units and they fitted the bill perfectly.”

Logic Wireless is the authorised distributor of Siyata cellular devices in Australia and has an established partnership with Telstra to supply PTT devices for use on the Telstra network.

“This is one of the first significant installations of PTT over cellular units within the bus sector that we are aware of, with 90 coaches in the fleet now fitted with these fixed vehicle devices,” Johnson says.

Installation of the units was carried out by the coachline’s own mechanics as part of the regular maintenance and service routine, reducing the time the coaches needed to be out of service.

“This technology offers many benefits including that it works anywhere there is cellular coverage, giving increasing flexibility for the fleet to operate over a much wider area without the range limitations of a traditional radio network,” Johnson says.

“As well as providing crystal clear voice calls, these devices allow drivers to operate other enterprise workforce applications, whether that be mapping, job management or tracking, all on the same platform and with audible voice prompts,” he says.
